Steel Heat Color Chart
Steel Heat Color Chart. This is something you will have to either learn on your own or seek the advice of others that have worked this type steel. The left side of the color guide is generally used to identify the temperature of the steel during the austenizing phase of the heat treating process, or during the forging process.
During hardening, normalizing, and annealing, steel is heated to various temperatures that produce color changes.

Some have a short working temperature, which means that they only should be worked at medium to bright yellow. The thickness of that oxidation has a direct correlation to color via the light reflected (interference), and thus you get this spectrum: The above chart shows the heat treat colors for steel by temperature. Certain tool steels require a double tempering.
